CAD Modeling

Computer Aided Design (CAD) is now an essential part of product design, development, and engineering. Most all product design projects generally end in some form of CAD model for manufacturing and production. All product designers should have some familiarity and skill in CAD modeling, whether for external aesthetic form creation and ergonomics/usability, or for product engineering purposes.

NOTE: This modeling section will be deleted on this site and moved to Bill's Product Design University site (thepdu.com) as soon as that site is published (announced on this site when done).

Though there are many very good CAD modeling software packages out there, I personally use, and highly recommend, Autodesk's Fusion 360 CAD software package. It runs natively on both Macs and PCs, is easy to learn and use, and will do most anything needed in product design and development. This includes solid modeling, surface modeling, design analysis, animation, rendering, and detail drawings. There are also a vast array of demonstrations and tutorials available online for learning this software.

Autodesk's Fusion 360 software can be accessed online by clicking here: Fusion 360. The software is available for free to students and educators, and a free trial is available for professionals.
